I apologize for any one else I neglected to mention. This was kind of an informal team competition and apparently our team won since we were the only ones who labeled our trash ;). Contrary to the propaganda that is produced by the city of Guaymas San Carlos is still full of garbage from easter. Our team elected to clean up the highway in front of the Teta Kawi. I am not sure which other areas got cleaned up but I would like to see this event grow in the future so perhaps we can make this an annual event and get Guaymas involved. Technically it is the responsibility of Guaymas to clean up San Carlos but if we here in San Carlos do not demand this of local government it will not happen. We would also like to push the relatively new local supermarkets chains of Santa Fe and Ley to get rid of plastic bags and switch over to something reusable. Ines and I contacted city officials just before last Easter in an attempt to get the City of Guaymas on board a project that would take plastic bags out of the local super market scenario but city officials refused to return our calls. Local Oxxo and Extra conveince stores could also be brought in on the plan.
A few weeks ago we reported that Guaymas mayor Otto Claussen was in town to listen to locals on varios issues of concern. This was really no more than a glorified press conference for the city but one of the things that was reported to the public is that Guayms would like San Carlos to have the designation of a Pueblo Escencio (Scenic Town). Supposedly all electrical and phone cables will be buried underground. While we won’t hold our breath waiting for that to happen there is no reason to believe that we can not get local supermarkets to give up the plastic bag. Something that is completely doable within the near future.
One of the other ideas we have thought about much over the years but have not acted upon would be a program in San Carlos similar to the adopt a highway program in the US. The idea goes something like this. Local business owners and organizations or private individuals would begin adopting areas in San Carlos that they would be responsible for cleaning. Local beaches included. The city of Guaymas would allow these local business to promote the work they have done by putting up small esthetically pleasing signs announcing to anyone passing through that area who has been responsible for cleaning up.
So weigh in on these ideas and if anyone out there is willing to put some effort into a campaigns such as these lets start a dialog on it and see if we can not make it a realty!!
